On 16 May 1884, Angelo Moriondo receives a patent in Italy in 1884 for his invention of the first coffee-making machine that used both water & steam to make what we now call espresso coffee.
This device is described as "The first Italian bar machine that controlled the supply of steam and water separately through the coffee"
Unlike later espresso machines, it was a bulk brewer and did not brew coffee for the individual customer. Moriondo continued to improve his invention with successive upgrades, patenting each advancement.
Unfortunately, little is known about Angelo Moriondo and his invention. Moriondo's machine was designed for mass-scale production rather than individual use, and he did not manufacture it on a large scale, so no machines exist today. Later, Luigi Bezzera and Desiderio Pavoni improved upon Moriondo’s design to create the first espresso machine. Their machine produced the first single-shot espresso, which is the basis of modern espresso beverages.
