I recently finished watching the majority of the DCAU. It understands the characters better than several other DC adaptations before and since. Justice Lord Superman is better than Injustice Superman, for example.

The episode, while great and well worth watching, always rubbed me the wrong way. It introduced an 11th hour existential dilemma not present in the original Beyond series and undermined its central tenet, which was that anyone could wear the cowl.
Before the JLU episode aired, Terry was already accepted as the successor to Batman's legacy because of his own efforts, despite having zero connections to the past principle cast. Now, we're lead to believe that Terry had always been tormented about his origins and purpose, all to set up his retroactive blood relation to Bruce. It feels like a weak attempt by the show's creators to legitimize Terry in their eyes, when the character had already proven himself time and time again throughout Beyond's run.
Ultimately, the retcon does no damage to the canon and is mostly harmless but it steals Terry's hard earned place among the Bat Family. Rather than a kindred spirit brought into the fold due to his own actions and determination, he was "destined" by DNA to be the next bat, regardless of whether he wanted it or not.
