As far as I know:
Death Note (manga) was released weekly in Shonen Jump (a manga magazine). After a certain "moment," the series stopped, and there was a two-month hiatus. Then, they resumed weekly releases. Many people believe that Shonen Jump pressured Tsugumi Ohba (the writer) to continue the story. (Shonen Jump actually did this with Dragon Ball Z and Bleach as well).
The biggest proof of this theory is Tsugumi Ohba's next manga, Bakuman, which is about a manga artist drawing a series that resembles Death Note. In the story, the artist is pressured to continue the series beyond its originally intended ending...

I don't think the rest of the anime is that bad and the manga is way better, I actually love the second half of the manga as much as the first. The anime just rushed the whole second half into 10 episodes and cut out whole plotlines and explanations

Spoilers for anyone who didn't watch Death Note. The creators agree with this because there's a movie version of Death Note where after L dies and Light is on his way to taking over the world, Ryuk writes Light's name down and ends his life at the end of the movie. Which was a much better ending.

Unfortunately the shows that end at a good point just make you want more of them because they were so good. Gravity Falls is a great example where it ended exactly where it should have, and I’m happy that it didn’t go on too long, and yet I still want more of it

You did not understand the anime. Everyone hates the post L's death part but it is esencial to the plot. Near is the answer to why L who knew killer's identity from the start became friends with him.
