In the short campaign we are starting tomorrow, a player rolled: 15, 15, 15, 13, 13, 13. At that point we all said "youre a human". But i agree. In most other scenario you would play something else or variant human for the feat

A neat change that baldurs gate 3 made for basic humans was the human militia ability, that allows every base human to equip certain martial gear and shields. Not the fanciest or exciting change but a well needed one

Humans have always been boring in a fantasy mythos.
Variant humans shouldn't be special either. It's actually dumb that every character doesn't start the game with a feat.

The wast majority of fantasy races are either: "What if humans but better in this way" or "What if we exagerated bad human traits" Which results in playable races better than human, and generally hostile creatures respectively.
Another factor is the general trend of removing mechanical negatives from races. Which doesn't change humans, but make everything else all benefit.
Humans are average at everything in a system that doesn't allow you to be bellow average at anything.

In a curse of strahd game a few years back, a friend insisted on playing a base human wild magic sorcerer, then in the death house got the reincarnation effect and we killed him on the altar, and he reincarnated as a drow (curse of strahd has no sunlight) it was amazing
