The most important part of building a small DIY paver patio are the string lines. They're the guide that you measure down from to excavate, pour your base, screed, and ultimately lay pavers. If the lines are set correctly, the rest of the patio job will go much smoother.

I'll be posting a full video that shows the entire job from start to finish and shorts showing each step sped up. #shorts

You do you. But I would have excavated and got some more of that clay out and replace with at least 4 to 6 inches of compacted gravel, then an inch of sand screeded out to lay the pavers. Every patio/walkway ive ever been called in to fix was because they used too much sand. It either washed out or migrated into the soil below. But if you dont care and your clients dont care, charge on man

Class 5 gravel, compact, lay sand, level, place pavers, sweep sand over paver seams to set. Clay will not drain water abd getting this level over clay is just not going to be right 😂

Bro if a big roof is not going over it you deff should have removed the clay and added some drainage

Clay makes a great base if it’s virgin soil

What he meant to say is dig down to compactable soil or if there’s clay, amend it with Portland/Lime and Gravel mix compacted in. Then come with a Geo fabric followed by 6” minimum 3/4 clean base and 1” of 3/8 clean bedding layer 😂

Without a permeable base, your pavers will heave when clay freezes

The sand will settle. Its not whats underneath the sand. This will fail in less than ten years. Forget about the lines.
