Buying High-Quality vs Low-Quality Bonds
If you were going to buy slightly lower-quality bonds to get more income, you're probably better off buying those in a very Diversified ETF or mutual fund format. We generally recommend ETFs for the lower cost. But you want to buy those in a very Diversified basket so that you're minimizing the credit risk of any one issuer, even though there's a cost to that basket, so even if you buy an exchange-traded fund, there's a little bit of a cost to it, but you're getting a very Diversified portfolio. But if you're buying super high-quality bonds, government bonds, high-quality municipal bonds, CDs, and so forth, generally, you're probably better off buying those individually because there's such a low risk of default that you don't need to be paying anything out in terms of an ETF or a mutual fund fees.
