Its good he came clean when the phophet Nathan comfronted him about it anf repented but God still punished. He is a just God after all.
I think Solomon being chosen by God as King might have been partly to honour Uriah through Bathsheba.

It took nearly a year for David to repent and he repented because he was publicly convicted and humiliated by Nathan the prophet, but i honestly believe that had he repented earlier, God would have forgiven him immediately and he would have escaped the humiliation and perhaps even averted the death of his infant child.
