Hi Frieda! My son Adam was on your tour last weekend and he absolutely loved it. He was very grateful that you were so thoughtful when taking him to restaurants. He said you went into the back and asked if something was vegan for him! Thank you so much for being so kind and considerate. You are amazing! I've been following your channel for a long time, and it made me feel great to know he is learning about our faith from you. (His ancestors are Eastern-European Jews who may be related to the folks in your community, so the tour was very educational for him.)

I wish the balconies in my building were set up like that. It's a long walk up and down the stairs carrying food to our sukkah.

I've snooped on Google Streetview in Williamsburg and Kiryas Joel, just seeing what it was like (your recent 1.5-hour walkthrough video is SO much better, BTW. If any nerds like me are watching, check that video - so satisfying), and consciously looked for this because I remembered your explanation that they can't have another balcony above because if it's obstructed to the sky, it's useless for religious purposes. It was fascinating to click, check the buildings... oh that one I could rent in, clearly not built for religious Jews... to the next building, oh, even if they'd let me, couldn't take an apartment with such a perfect spot for a sukkah lol.

And then I have to sit back and think... I am probably an atheist, raised Catholic, in a city where every Jewish person could fit around your kitchen table, two days travel from NYC, but I can recognize a building built to enable sukkahs when I see one. What? The internet is truly amazing. If a Hasidic Jewish person happened to walk down my street, the heartfelt, appropriate welcome I could give them. I could even sing a few lines of some of their traditional songs. Without ever having met someone from that community. I don't deny the risk, especially to insular communities, but wow, the internet can do good too.

This balcony design is so smart! Hope the weather is much nicer this year and that all who celebrate will have a great Sukkot. 🍋

Here in Vienna, Austria there are lots of Sukkas in back yards of Jewish families Appartments.
Everyone is very excited and in good spirits. It's a fun time, after Yom Kippur. Many family members from far away have come to Vienna for the holidays.

That is so fascinating, Frieda. Are there many apartment buildings with deep balconies like that?

We made lots of cutouts as kids- I am not Jewish- dolls holding hands and tons of snowflakes. I used to color a sheet of paper and then put the cutout snowflake over it. I was pretty impressed with this. I knew about the shelters with the sky peeping through but I hadn’t known they decorate them.

The only reason I would come to New York City would be to go on one of your tours during Sukkot. As a Gentile I have celebrated with other Gentiles in Idaho who understand its meaning and thoroughly enjoy the festivities.

I've been in Brooklyn many times, but not in Williamsburg, so I've never seen these balconies.
