They did this in the 1960 and 1970's on Sheffield Island in Connecticut. "Hippy Land" was on one end of the island. My family owned the other end so we spent weekends out there. As kids, we wandered to that end once and saw the webs in the trees! People were camping out there, we could tell from the food and supplies there.
