The Gregorian Calendar Should Be Illegal

Most of us follow the Gregorian calendar without giving it much thought: January, February, March... But have you ever wondered where those month names come from or why they even matter? The truth is, the names and structure we use today are pretty random. For example, "October" means "the eighth month," even though it’s now the tenth month on our calendar. So, is this really the best way to keep track of time?

Other cultures have come up with creative and practical ways to divide the year. For instance, the Natchez people of North America use 13 lunar cycles to mark their months, naming each one after something important for that time of year, like Deer Hunting Month or Strawberry Month. These names help people focus on what’s really happening in nature around them.

I'm down, as long as we change all months to have 28 days and we tack on the extra days at the end of the year as vacation days for all.

The “flaws” you mentioned are exactly what helped it becomes so universal

All those intricate things in the other calendars mean that they're just not helpful to anyone but the locals while trying to be helpful. Which is worse that what we have, the months aren't trying to be useful, it's just that every 1st October, we're in the same place relative to the sun as last year

Actually, the months' names are named on religious basis. For example:

January: January is named after Janus the Roman god for transitions, beginings and time.

February: February is named after the ancient Roman Festival, Febura, which I the festival of purification that is marked on the end of winter and the beginning of spring.

March: is named after the Roman god named Mars ( not the planet :> ) the Roman god of war and the month of when military campaigns are resumed.

April: April is named after the Latin word "aperire" which means to "open" and the word refers to the opening of flower buds in spring.

May: May is named after the Greek goddess Maia, who was identified with the Roman era goddess of fertility, Bona dea, whose festival is held in May.

June: June is named after the Roman goddess Juno,the god of marriage and childbirth, and the wife of Jupiter, king of the gods.

July: ( my bday month ^^ ): July was named in honor of Julius Caesar. Quintilis, which was his birth month, was renamed July when he died. Quintilis means “fifth month” in Latin, which represents where this month originally fell in the Roman calendar.

August: August, eighth month of the Gregorian calendar. It was named for the first Roman emperor, Augustus Caesar, in 8 bce. Its original name was Sextilus, Latin for “sixth month,” indicating its position in the early Roman calendar.

September: September is named after the Latin word septem, which means "seven". This is because it was originally the seventh month in the Roman calendar. The Roman calendar began with March, which was called mensis Martius or "Mars' month".

October: October is named after the Latin word octo, which means "eight". This is because it was the eighth month of the year in the early Roman calendar, before January and February were added.

November: The month of November is named after the Latin word novem, which means "nine". The name comes from the fact that November was the ninth month in the Roman calendar, which originally had only 10 months. When the Roman calendar was reformed to include January and February, November kept its name and became the eleventh month.

December: December is named after the Latin word decem, which means "ten". This is because it was originally the tenth month of the year in the Roman calendar, which began in March.

So, many of these are named after kings, numbers which make sense if u think about it and because of its a Gregorian calendar, obviously there will be some religious gods and goddesses names.

And no, It's won't make sense to make "October" "Crunchtember" because in the month of October it is not necessary that each country has the season of autumn which continents like Asia don't have. So the crunch of leaves won't exist here, which doesn't make sense. And many countries have already adapted the Gregorian calender. So yeah, th Gregorian calendar shouldn't be illegal:)

That’s WHY the Gregorian Calendar is SO important. Everyone all over the world has different things that mark the change of the seasons, or what agriculture is grown, or what holiday it is. The Gregorian Calendar solves all of these inconsistencies by NOT having months with names associated with anything, it’s standard! Crunchtober SUCKS because it only applies to certain regions of the world.

As an Australian, this will cause a lot more issues if the rest of the English speaking world picked a different calendar, based on the opposite season to us. January would be called something related to cold and snow, while I'm laying in the floor discovering what it feels like to be a wet sponge.
It will only lead to confusion.

It would be better if the entire world had one standardized calendar. What you are proposing does not take into account is the fact, the north and south are in different seasons does that mean we will always be six-month difference between us.

The Gregorian calender was made specifically because it's recording specifically time, not natural events which are and will rapidly change

Polish also does it that way while still using Gregorian calendar. Few easy examples: November - listopad, month of falling leaves, August - sierpień, month of sickle (sierp), as time of harvest, april- kwiecień, month of flowers

For anyone wondering the Gregorian calendar was based off Rome and in Roman culture you would start the year with spring hence October would be the eighth month

"I dislike that our calendar has names and words that are universally just for calendars, it would be way more useful if calendars had a fifty-mile useful radius and everybody trying to make plans across national borders had to consult a fucking guidebook"

Now I want to see the modern capitalism version of the Natchez calendar.

For example:
April = Annual statement and dividend paying month
December = consumption month
September = 5. Production month
