Myth: A Big Turbo Is Better Than A Smaller One

Whilst big turbos will gain higher top end power figures they do have a hidden cost.

They take longer to spool up so the bottom end power is reduced. So for most drivers out there they will see a performance hit when they opt for a large turbo, even though they may be making big numbers on the Dyno, they will not be as quick in day to day driving where you typically spend most of your time at the lower RPM ranges.

Did you go for a big turbo, did you experience lag at the bottom end and what tips would you pass on to someone wanting to buy a turbo upgrade?

In most cases bigger is always better but that often runs its course. It's all about the desired result/application. I've seen twin turbo engines run better on single turbos and I've seen twin engines run better on single setups. What are you after??? Acceleration, top speed, torque? A mix of the two? It's really a minefield. Most highpower twins from the 90s can run a very simple single turbo setup these days and produce impressive numbers Whereas say modern twins often run better as twins but upgraded. I'm a diesel guy so my options are always simples. bigger bolts n rods. Uprated pump ,oversized injectors and and a big ass turbo. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ You dont even have to go that far for the average guy. FMIC and remap with a dcat n egr blank is enough to have fun with a pd engine
