For nearly 30 years, I’ve been a 911 dispatcher. This job has given me some of the best—and worst—days of my life. Lately, the weight of it all has been heavy. In the last few weeks alone, I’ve handled an officer-involved shooting and two separate near-drowning calls involving toddlers. By the grace of God, my officer and those little ones survived, but the trauma of those moments has left its mark.
Being a dispatcher means carrying the voices of people’s worst days long after the call ends. It’s a job that demands strength, but even the strongest need support. I’ve had the chance to talk to a therapist and others who understand, and it’s reminded me how important it is to take care of our mental health.
If you’re struggling, please know—you’re not alone. Prioritizing self-care isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity. Take the time to check in with yourself. Reach out. Talk to someone. Your well-being matters just as much as the people you help.
