My grandfather was a miner at the Daisy Hill Copper Mining Company in Jerome, AZ. He lived in the Mexican Camp and was married there in 1919. Like so many mining communities of that period, miners were in debt to the company store for supplies and food stuff. One day there was a new guy at the counter that filled an Rx for my grandmother. She had terrible stomach cramps and was not getting any better despite the medicine the doctor had prescribed. The new guy commented “Boy, you must have a big rat!” My grandmother hurried back home and packed up their belongings. Under the cover of darkness my grandparents fled the horrors of Jerome, winding their way down the mountainside in an old jalopy toward Globe, AZ, with the realization they had exhausted their credit with the store proprietors; cut off and poisoned for their debt to the company store. The mine was founded by the Canadian family of Anne Jerome, the mother of Winston Churchill, the illustrious Prime Minister of Britain.
