I saw a documentary with a WW1 German soldier talking about the Australians, he said said they were big and tough and could shoot very well, meanwhile they were mostly skinny half starved kids from the slums. They were terrified of the Australians because they would tell them that they were going to have smoko and then attack. He then said they would go somewhere else and attack them. They were also terrified of being taken prisoner as they had been told they would get tortured badly. He ended up getting captured by the Australians and instead of being beaten and tortured he was given a cigarette, a cup of tea and a bully beef sandwich. He said getting captured wasn't too bad at all.

That's exactly why my No 1 Mk3* Lee Enfield turns heads on range days, often get guys wondering what semi-auto rifle I'm using after mad-minuting a magazine or two. Satisfyingly-smooth action, albeit not nearly as satisfying for my wallet lmao.

I own a few old bolt action battle rifles and the Lee Enfield does have the smoothest action of them all. It also has the advantage of holding ten rounds instead of the five the others hold.

This was still the cadet forces rifle for the UK in the 1970s, a lovely rifle to fire & easy to care for. But not as fun as the Bren...

The .303 Enfield has the best action of a bolt gun of WW2. It's a good rifle for rapid fire.

The fact that this gun saw active service for over 100 years proves how good it was. Reliable in all weather conditions, fastest bolt action rifle, incredibly accurate, 10 round magazine to reduce reloads, low maintenance, I genuinely think it’s the best bolt action service rifle ever made, it might not be the best in every category but it’s one of the best in every category, and in some it is the best.

I've got an Australian made 1940s Mk3. One slight upward tap on the bolt and it springs back at me, it's insane how smooth it operates.

Literally the best rifle ever I think I'm surprised how underrated it is compared to Mosin and Kar.

The story about the BEF at Mons being mistaken for having huge numbers of machine guns is mostly legend. In reality, each British infantry battalion in 1914 only had two machine guns, but the men were trained to fire their Lee–Enfield rifles quickly and accurately. This emphasis on rapid musketry came from lessons drawn by British observers during the Russo-Japanese War, where machine guns had shown their potential. Musketry regulations demanded 15 rounds per minute in rapid fire, with the realistic aim of sustaining about 10 accurate shots. This disciplined, sustained rifle fire was unusual for the time and inflicted heavy losses on the Germans as they advanced.

British newspapers later exaggerated this into the claim that German officers believed they were facing masses of machine guns. Modern historians haven’t found much German evidence to back that up. What we can say is that German troops weren’t used to such intense rifle fire and sometimes mistook it for automatic weapons, but the broader ā€œmachine gun mythā€ was really a patriotic embellishment that grew after the battle.

Two of my Great Grand Uncles fought in WW1. We still have that exact gun in a metal military box somewhere in my Uncle’s house. Holy the gun won them 12 medals for how quick they could fire the thing, it was so fast that a magazine cartridge lasted a few seconds! Of course we couldn’t fire the gun though due to it has no bullets in it and the British military didn’t want World War One veterans going back home and killing people recklessly. They won the medal of honour, bravery, loyalty, best soldier, and many more! One of them won the medal of best soldier because he was seen by a high ranking officer, and saved his life

When you're on a firing line with two SMLEs kneeling down and you're prone between them, the concussion is amazing!

We got a phone call from the butts asking us to "please don't do that again!"

Back in the late ā€˜80s, I used to own a British 303 Enfield that fired 7.7mm rounds.
That thing was a genuine grizzly killer. And the rifle report——very loud.
The cost for ammunition? It was about $16 dollars per twenty rounds, either Remington or Winchester. And that was late ā€˜80s.

As air cadet in the 60’s we had to qualify doing rapid fire with these rifles. 10 rounds in 40 seconds with a score minimum 30 out of possible 50. 14 years old at the time

Kind of sad he didn’t mention the ā€˜mad minute’ drills they had with the Enfield. It’s a very unique style of shooting that can achieve some pretty incredible speed, but it definetely looks unconventional.
