Iāve been pickinā for probably 55 years plus. I remember the night that my playing mind set completely changed. Went to show that my teachers band was putting on. At that time I was an experienced player. String band and bluegrass music. We chatted at intermission and he said youāre going to come up and pick one. My initial feeling was no way, I suck. My buddy knew I was nervous and he had some simple words of wisdom. He told me that my teacher wouldnāt have made the invite unless he knew I could hang.
So I got called on stage and my instructor/mentor said exactly the same thing. āWeāre in āGā. It was awesome, great round of applause. I just played, wasnāt worried about anything but playing like myself. Iāve stopped trying to sound like someone else. Sure Iāll transcribe solos from my heroes but I play a lot other stuff of my own. Paraphrasing Tony Rice, he said Iāve already played it my way,show me youā.
