The problem is I see it isn't a government problem but a societal problem. Where I live there's a bunch of wealthy people who are very interested in not creating any more housing because I guess more housing means their current housing prices will go down. They have their own Society to prevent any sort of investment in the city trying to keep it like it's 1985 or something. Anytime there's any new Housing Development or infrastructure project people will come out in droves to shut it down but those same people are nowhere to be seen when it comes to updating parks and things that will increase their housing value. They just got a municipal expansion shut down that would have built hundreds of houses. Even in the town beside ours the City Council voted to increase the tax on houses but only for the people actually living in the houses so they can keep their own personal empty houses exempt from the tax increase further putting burdens on renters and families. Landlords heresy housing as I get rich quick scheme and will invest very little into their rental properties letting them rot literally I've known so many people that live with black mold and the landlord refuses to even acknowledge it. Society needs to change its opinion on housing from an investment vehicle back to something to actually be lived in. There's one development company in town and when I passed by the warehouse it was filled with classic cars. I heard somewhere that if the American dream is to own a home the Canadian dream is to own somebody else's home.

The federal government can legislate public housing and rent controls.
