Hindi and Urdu are essentially dialects of one language: Hindustani. So, why are they considered separate languages? One word: politics.

Only colloquial forms of Hindi and Urdu are mutually intelligible. Formal variants of Hindi and formal variants of Urdu are not mutually intelligible mainly due to different sources of 'high' vocabulary. Most 'high' vocabulary in Hindi comes from Sanskrit while most 'high' vocabulary in Urdu comes from Persian (and to a lesser extent Arabic and Chagatai Turkic). So, if a Hindi speaker hears an Urdu newsreader they would understand very little and vice versa.

Originally it was called hindwi, most of the turkic and persian poets (amir khurso, etc) called it hindwi. But muslims wanted to distance themselves from this identity, this created Urdu. It was almost similar untill it was highly persianized by zia-ul haq a islamist dictator.
They are still javing this identity crisis, they don't read about thier pre islamic history, now they are trying to arabise thier language and depersianize, since iranians are ebecoming non muslims
