It looks very practical: you can avoid decking your horse in the back of the head with your trombone, while still deafening it with the bell so it won't get scared by your side's cannons firing.

It makes sense from a trombonist pov...one valve per slide position, but playing anything on it if you have even the slightest bit of valve experience is a mind melter.
