I personally don't do them on most knives.

I always dread sharpening my spydercos for the first time, i dont like putting sharpening notches in them so i have to take my time and do a BUNCH of careful passes with a freshly flattened stone at the base to get the heel of the edge all the way to the plunge. Resharpening after that is pretty easy.

How does that CPM CRU-WEAR sharpen? How is the edge retention?

Its not a "sharpening notch" despite popular belief ... it does keep stone edges crisp and ease sharpening but its called a Spanish notch its original intention was to catch the edge of enemy blades during knife fights so you didn't lose fingers without having a proper guard ... still handy to have on a knife and i include them on the majority of the knives i make

Its called a sharpening choil, and its fucking ugly. Get better at sharpening and it isnt a issue, at all. All adding a choil does is add a eye sore and a place to get get caught when cutting. Useless.
