It's a thought-terminating clichƩ. It works as a shield for when someone doesn't want to be pressed on an opinion so they try to make the other person feel stupid or ridiculous for questioning them. I've seen all kinds of people use it but you're definitely right that it's a favorite phrase among conservatives for obvious reasons.

I had a couple of jackoffs on YouTube tell me the other day that I didnāt have common sense because I donāt like Kyle Rittenhouse. Every time I hear someone lionize that murderer, I often wonder who or what is decaying in the trunk of their car. I always feel like I need to get a judge to authorize a search warrant for these peopleās trunks and basements due to how little empathy they show. In the lack of empathy department, they share that in common with Henry Lee Lucas. Coincidence?

They probably want to use it to make it sound as if taking away xyz right is the "normal and sensible" state of things too, and "everyone knows it's supposed to be like that" ughhhh
I mean sure :/ lots of the targeted groups have been oppressed for centuries/the whole of mankind, but "normal/the way everyone does it" does not make it right or okay LOL
One example is "beating your children". That was super normal until very recently, and very not okay lol

I also see "Common sense" being used when people think their experience and worldview is the only one in the world. One less extreme example that hopefully a lot of people can understand is when a rich person says "why didn't you just go to the doctor, that's common sense" because they've never had to think about not having health insurance or worrying about medical debt. But you can expand that to multiple experiences. IMO very very few things are "common sense"

In Canada, a phrase I heard a lot during our recent federal election was "common sense conservative" when the conservative party delivered speeches/statements/etc (I'm very far from conservative, but I pay attention to what all the major parties are doing). It's no secret among Canadian liberals/leftists that the current conservative leader gives serious shades of orange so this tracks for me for sure.

How can be banning Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet - which is part of the canon of the international literary world in regards to education- be COMMON SENSE in Texas? Oh sure, everything is different in America? Yes, education never compares to guns or hypocritical moral standards. There has never been anything to learn from that play in the first place and all those professors and students dealing with it for decades and those privileged ones praising it for centuries were all to be pitied. People like that just piss me off, that they have a platform to spit their nonsense everywhere when before social media times we thankfully did not have to listen to their bs, unless you were the unfortunate neighbour. But I need to be respectful of another's idiocy - they have a right to it after all.

Accepting trans people exist is common sense. Not treating foreign people like crap is common sense. Not treating any people like crap is common sense. Everyone acknowledging that our government puts profit over people is common sense. Hating greedy land lords is common sense. Saying no people should be homeless in a wealth society is common sense. Conservatives don't know what common sense means.
Well said as always Willow. Love how you stand up against this crap. You would make a fantastic political streamer btw.

I've had this gripe for SOOO LONG. It serves the same purpose as "woke", it's a reactionary term to justify anything, it doesn't mean anything, and it's a way to manipulate people into not thinking about the substance of the argument
"If it's common sense then it must be ok" it's means of convincing people to conform and it's and invitation to throw out your bain because someone authoritative said it

For a long time I've considered "common sense" to mean "This is a base assumption I have that I never bothered critically examining". It's really no surprise that conservatives keep insisting on using it as an argument.
