Before you read: Yes, I know the video is about lampreys. I thought it might be cool to add a fact about a very similar creature! Enjoy. <3
Fun fact:
Leeches are used at hospitals/pharmacies in actual emergencies! If you want a little detail on why, read more!
Hospitals use leeches in emergencies. If you get your finger detached, there is actual a pretty good chance the hospital may use a leech to keep the veins healthy. Leeches can also be helpful in amputations! They can help blood flow in certain body parts. These include the nose, ear or scalp. All level 1 trauma centers have leeches in their building. Interesting right?
The medicinal use of leeches known as hirudotherapy (i think) actually RE-emerged in the 1970-1980s in believe. When a leech is used, the doctor/surgeon will actually cut a small incision so that the leech can latch onto the patientās body. The leech will slowly and steadily suck out excess blood from your body, which can improve blood health and circulation, as well as tisue health.
Although leeches arenāt used as much as they used to in the medical field, they are still used fairly āoftenā. So the real question is..
Are they friend or foe?
