I've been a single full time parent for 15 years and every time someone is "surprised" by this I think, "why?"

My friend, a father of 2, gets congratulated for "babysitting" when taking care of his own kids. As if they aren't his responsibility to raise and spend time with. It irritates him just as much as it irritates his wife. The gender divide hurts both sides.

I don't just love you as a lawyer, I love you as a person. Keep preaching.

Every time i take my kids out with me its always "look who got stuck with the kids" or "its daddys turn today" like, huh? Sorry, your father wouldn't spend time with you, but i make sure i get to spend time with my kids, and i enjoy every minute of it.

Mike, you routinely will frame things to often help people see the small discriminating behaviors in everyday life. Especially with gender. From a loving husband, thank you mate.

You're correct. The flipside of course is being constsntly questioned as to why you're alone with these kids, where is their mother, what are you doing taking them into the toilets? Etc etc.

Women rarely face that.

Both are wrong and both need to be sorted.

My husband takes one of our kids to the grocery store early on Sunday mornings and he gets so many compliments. I go with the kids and I get dirty looks if the kid DARES to speak above a certain decibel.

It cuts both ways. The expectation for her is to have complete control while the expectation for you is to not give a damn about your kids.

Same type of language where people say that fathers are babysitting their children.

This is my biggest pet peeve as a dad. I will go out of my way to say if you don't praise moms then don't praise dads for doing things they are supposed to do. It's called being a parent. We need to raise the bar for expectations of fathers out there

I have a two and one year old. The amount of “oh, they must be an handful”s I have received is unconscionable. I’m sorry my toddler doesn’t have a fully formed brain and therefore can not control the flood of emotion he is having.

Edit y’all never had little old church lady double talk to you, bless your hearts.

Been a stay at home dad for 30+ years. I got a lot of those, I also got a lot of freezing out by mom's and women and carefully watched by Police. Giving everyone a little slack is great advice.

I’ve always taken those “you’re such a good dad” from the little old ladies at the supermarket as a “bless your heart” type of thing. It always comes during those moments where I don’t quite have firm control of my toddler in that given moment.

People always find it odd when dads are the active parent. My son's school will call his mom to take care of something and are always shocked when she tells them to call me instead. Same goes for the doctor, dentist, etc. They are never used to dad being the main parent.

When my daughter had her son (as an adult, not an underage mom,) when she'd correct people that she wasn't babysitting, he was hers, she literally had people accusing her of lying. From her rendition of some interactions, some people sounded ready to call CPS. I'm just not sure what or who they thought they were protecting.

I've been asked shit like "oh baby sitting to give mom a day off?

"No, I killed my ex and now we're on the run."

Their faces are priceless.

Being a parent is the hardest job. I try to give them all due respect. Within reason. If their kid is destroying things yeah I’m gonna confront them. But if the kid is just crying loudly or energetic that is a kid being a kid and the parent is having a worse time than anyone.

I actually did tell a lady she had great vibes from the way she was interacting with her curious and compassionate kid at the store this weekend. Never hurts to build others up!

Mike, the flip side of this would be the multiple background checks I went through to escort my Niece's Girlscout troop to Alaska. The trip was nearly canceled because GSA couldn't fathom why the troop wanted a local guide.
They had a ton of fun, saw lots of wildlife, met the Mayor of Talkeetna, and made it home mostly without incident.
