Hey Mark, SPAN is a football shaped dome that is attached to the top of the fuselage for mission sorties. It's a Satcom datalink that transmits near-realtime mission data from SIGINT and Electro-optical camera or ASARS data. The U-2 pictured is the U-2 two seat trainer. It was modified into a trainer using parts of a U-2 that crashed. The 99ERS is based at Beal AFB. For airmen, contractors, etc., they occasionally offer ride alongs in the chase car. I bet a lot of the pilots are fans and can arrange a ride along for you and family members. The backup pilot drives the chase car during takeoff and landing. Like you said, he advises the U-2 pilot. I was at Beale AFB a few times when the U-2 was taking off and landing I was able to watch it from a very close distance. They are so loud, I believe they were louder than the fighter jets taking off from here at Lackland AFB

NOAA flew their U2 out of New Zealand a few years ago. I always wondered how they landed here, because I don't think they had a chase car. They might have it only seemed to fly at night so maybe they did.

We crossed the wrong lines on Osan while we where there with our Marine Corps AH-1W Cobras and UH-1N Hueys and got arrested. Our Sgt Maj lost his mind for wasting our time, we could hear it before they took the cuffs off and let us go. Those planes are bigger than they appear.
