What made Predator so great was the amount of tension it had. Enough to suffocate. Nowadays that tension is cut by jokes and wise cracks. Arnold was smart enough to leave that towards the end and not while his men were dying.

Remember when the script for The Predator was leaked online and in response to the outrage over what seemed like a rediculous plot, the production company assured everyone that said script wasnt for the actual movie? Only for the movie to come out and it actually was?

Predator wouldnât exist without Alien, and Alien (1979) is the better movie in my opinion. The movies that came after the original really are a mixed bag, but the original has stood the test of time. It didnât overexpose the alien. Meanwhile the original Predator movie takes place in a well-lit jungle with an alien which is âinvisibleâ with an obvious outline thatâs just blurred.

The other problem is... well, it's hard to maintain that sense of dread when the protags keep winning movie after movie. We need to see one where the Predator just wins.

Honestly... The Predator seemed like if the first Predator movie was made today and we didnt have all of the others. There were things that didnt make sense and other things which were rather over the top. In a not fun "We have to make this the biggest, baddest one yet" way, more so than adding to the lore, as it were, or expanding it.

The second film felt very much like adapting one of the predator comic books to the big screen. An over the top city of violence that felt stylized and had a cast of characters ripped straight from the genre/era the story takes place in. I will agree that the second film is not as horror focused but it was an important proof of concept to how the creature can work in other environments which basically went on to be the best basis to all of the predator comic books. take an ugly motherfucker and put him into the setting of almost any story.

I think that's why prey was so good. It wasn't necessarily asking new questions, but without modern technology (and weapons) it amped up the tension again.
And it was interesting, because it implied that the events of that movie were what put humanity on the radar of the predator species.
