In Texas State Court, before Judge John Stevens Jr., where a defendant, with a history of addiction starting at age 8, pleads for mercy after a brutal assault on a nurse at a state-run psychiatric facility. The judge responds by meticulously detailing her 25-year history of daily drug use, arguing it's the reason she is a danger to the public. Watch the powerful moment her excuses are shut down before a 5-year prison sentence is handed down, leading to a dramatic outburst from her mother.

While every effort is made to provide raw courtroom footage, videos undergo light editing (cutting out long pauses, discussion from the bench on unrelated matters, removing personally identifying information about defendants, ancillary matters, etc.) and therefore may not accurately and completely represent the events that transpired.

At some point no matter how you're raised you KNOW the difference between right and wrong. Even addicts should be held accountable for their actions.

Im a nurse and support this judge. The amount of people coming into our hospitals on drug, hitting, spitting on us, cussing us out when we're trying to help is unexcusable. I pray all states will adopt this law. The first step to recovery is ACCOUNTABILITY. Idc what youre on, that doesnt give you the right to abuse people doing their job

If the parents won't teach her, I guess the judge will have to.

I've been an addict all my life sometimes using sometimes clean. But whatever I ever did or ever do will always be my responsibility.Because I'm the one who makes the choices. Drugs never made the choice for me.

We need more sane judges like this across the country especially in Blue States.

That is a shameful amount of time. Only in America do we accept prison sentences that are so long and outrageous because it’s all about money.
