The South Dakotas also solved a problem the North Carolinas had, vibrations. The North Carolina's hull shape and propulson system combination meant the ship would vibrate, which would cause structural damage over time, this was adjusted but the solution wasn't ideal. So the SDs had a dumpy profile compared to the slender NCs in large reason due to that.

The other difference between the North Carolina and South Dakotas was that the South Dakota class were slower than the North Carolina class. North Carolina (after they finally sorted out her vibration problem) could hit 28 knots, they were very fast ships for their size and armor. The South Dakota class was slower due to their length to beam ratio, they were less hydrodynamically efficient cause they were kind of stumpy. Personally the North Carolina class is my favorite WWII class of battleships, they were very pretty, forward thinking warships. The only reason they were not retained as long as their younger sisters in the Iowa class was because the Iowa class was 4 knots faster, with much reduced vibration, and with more accurate guns and advanced gunnery control systems compared to the NCs.
