I love how Prince mixed like an electronic musician.

i’d argue that the most notable example of prince muting the bass is on “When Doves Cry”. it also predates “Kiss” by a couple years

Love his Batman ‘89 soundtrack album even if Elfman’s actual soundtrack is fantastic

One time I was asked to play bass in a Prince cover set. They wanted to do Kiss and asked me to come up with a bassline for it. I declined to do so.

On When Doves Cry _ The minute he took the bass out it went from your standard RnB thing to something avant garde (for the time). The label did not like it but he held to his vision I remember it being on radio a lot and it was number one ! I didn’t think it was that great but I guess many did Legend

also not mentioned, but the snare on the track sits in the low end of the mix, which paired with the heavily effected kick creates a really interesting and cohesive low end feel for what is a SUPER simple drum pattern

The song was intended for a Prince side project known as The Family. Or it was the group Maserati. Either way, they took the rough demo Prince gave them and put a noise gate on the guitar that would trigger when a high hat went off. They also mixed in the songs signature, hard hitting snare drum. Prince knew he had to take it back, he heard a hit. He wrestled with his conscience for a few days and reclaimed the composition for his upcoming album. It remains his second most popular song behind When Doves Cry.

Kiss has always had a very satisfyingly minimalistic sound to me, I guess this is why. It’s more unique that way.

The fact that a guitar player that good was willing to sit down to even learn to understand such a work flow boggles my mind.

He could do it all: play, produce, and perform, not to mention manage himself and disrupt how artists are paid. He really was the most influential musician of the past 50 years.
