there are plenty of buddhists, plenty of visitors and plenty of shaolin at the temple why would they need to put in fake ones?

If anything they probably looked when the most tourists arrive and have more actual monks out during those times and yea maybe a couple townsfolks joined the temple and 'played' the part but were still learning the ways of the shaolin

when the temples in China are recruiting monks, they don’t really require genuine faith. I don’t think this qualifies as “fake monks”, because it’s hard to recruit so many young people who truly believe in Buddhism nowadays.

To be fair, I have been approached by "buddhist monks" who give a braclet and then demand money. When ask which temple they are from, most of them claim to be from the Shaolin Temple. However when I ask them to recite the Lotus Sutra, that is when they looked at me as if I had three heads.

It may not have been town folk but yes, the current rendition of the Shaolin Temple is a govt. sponsored tourist attraction. Due to the popularity of the Jet Li film, the govt. actually had to put out a press release for young people to stop trying to find the temple to go train there. At that time it was abandoned and dilapidated according to Jet Li. The govt. realized they were sitting on a tourist trap and "created" the myth in real life. They installed "monks" that were actually contemporary wushu performers and pretty much created what we have today.

After seeing the rocks-on-rebar and green-painted dirt stuff they did to try and make their more barren lands look more fertile, I actually AM inclined to believe they'd do something this foolish.
