I used to say this about deer, too. When you spend such time outdoors and around natural scents, your nose picks up on subtle anomalies, and your brain registers it appropriately. My friends would laugh and joke, but deer, pigs, and other animals have unique scents that can really stand out like a wet dog. Unfortunately, a few nose injuries, illnesses, etc and now I can't smelluch of anything anymore.

There's been many times I've smelled the deer close by before I knew to look for em. It's a real thing.
Deer sort of smell like horses with some kind of either oak sawdust or hardwood forest humus to me.
