Ā Ā Ā ā¢Ā BeginĀ theĀ BeguineĀ |Ā PianoĀ andĀ VocalĀ C...Ā Ā Here's my take on Cole Porter's 'Begin the Beguine', which he wrote while on a cruise between Indonesia and Fiji in 1935, aboard the Cunard liner 'Franconia' (interestingly, cruises were still a relatively new concept at the time). A beguine is a dance and a type of music, similar to a slow rhumba.
In October of 1935, it was introduced by June Knight in Porter's musical 'Jubilee', which was produced at the Imperial Theatre in Broadway, New York. The tune was slow to gain popularity, although Josephine Baker danced to it when she returned to America for the 'Ziegfield Follies of 1936'.
The first successful recording was in 1938, by Artie Shaw and His Orchestra, who were struggling at the time, but who were skyrocketed to fame and popularity by the recording. It has also been recorded by Chick Henderson, Frank Sinatra, and Ella Fitzgerald, among many others. I hope you enjoy it!
