Moved into a home with north facing roof. Got up one morning and water was dripping around a light fixture. Dam! Worth the effort to keep snow off. Excellent tip!

You can also check for insulation blow back at the baffles. Heat loss in that area is what causes ice melt there which then freezes.

After several winters of roof raking in Vermont, I discovered the perfect solution to ice dams. I now live in North Carolina.

I got a roof rake at our old house because the snow and ice backed up once and water started leaking inside house. After that , I always removed heavy snow from roof. Never had any issues after that.

We've gotten so much snow this year we really need to get a roof rake.

My house has this one spot where snow always melts. I'm losing a lot of heat right there. I need to eventually look into getting to it in the attic and putting more insulation on the floor in that area.

I have a snow peeler, more expensive but does an awesome job

All these issues are tending towards "zero", if you'd consider a metal sheet roof. Even if it's a costly purchase, it pays every Winter you have absolutely no problems with it. And it lasts for a lifetime.

New shingles every 15 years was a waste so we had a metal roof installed. With snow stops. Way better.

I have found that when I do this I get ice dams wherever I stop raking the snow off.

In my 1890 house with terrible insulation and a ridiculously steep roof pitch, this is a non-issue. No snow or ice on my roof at all.

Having a steel roof prevents a lot of the buildup
