there are countless M111s that are still on the road after 250k+ kms including mine. I abuse my boosted m111 daily and never opened her up once with 280k kms. Reinforced cast iron rods, pistons, block and high flowing head from factory its a super reliable high compression engine and easy power maker.

Love how you emphasized the relationship between power and reliability. As you said, getting an engine to make more power is extremely easy, the hard part is making it reliable and actually usable in daily life. Thats why hypercars like the Chiron, One: 1 and so on fascinate me so much. 30 years ago the power modern hypercars make would be undrivable.

If we expand a group of 4 bangers and include motorcycle engines, the mercedes engine is still mid class in terms of power output. Yes, motorcycle engines struggle with far less mass but must withstand greater rpm. Lifespan is also debatable, I heard legends about suzuki hayabusa with 350k miles on the clock and still spins.
