Research conducted during the El Niño drought of 2015-2016 in the Maliau Basin revealed that trees thrived in termite-rich areas because the soil retained moisture, leading to over a 50% increase in the survival of tree seedlings.
'Termites can effectively buffer against climate change,' says Rob Pringle, an ecologist at Princeton University. These remarkable little insects create tunnels, consume wood and leaf litter, and help distribute moisture while mixing nutrients into the soil. As climate change brings more severe droughts, our rainforest will need these unsung heroes to weather the long, dry spells ahead.
