Finding Bad Capacitors With A Hair Dryer Or Heat Gun

When trying to find the source of an intermittent problem, Sometimes applying a little heat from a hair dryer or heat gun to at a capacitor, may temporarily restore the capacitor long enough to verify that a bad capacitor is what's causing your circuit to malfunction. If you do use this technique, be careful not to over do it with to much heat,, so you don't cause any new problems .

Good tip. I used to use a hair dryer to heat a whole device to see if the fault would clear. Good starting point if you suspect bed electrolytics.

Well that debunks my theory on why one of my tvs doesn't work. An old 5" Samsung crt type. When I got it, it wouldn't power on, so I stored it in the garage until I got to it for repair. Well then winter arrived, and I happened to just plug it in for fun, powered it on and it fired right up in the garage. It only works if it's around 20° F. In the house where it's warmer, it's a no-go. Eager to see the cold cap vid.

Nice tool !! Been there done that !! The radial shaped ones can leak out the bottom, too. It'll pay to look under with a bright light if possible. Lable their polarity or photograph before lifting off the board. Great demonstration.

I have a high end JVC VCR that while valuable, it doesnt work right away. I literally have to throw the thing in a barely large enough food dehydrator for a few hours to get it warm enough to operate. Once it operates it will stay on forever, until i turn it off at which point it would need to be warmed up again. Obviously this JVC model is known to have bad capacitors.

it gives you the series resistance of the cap, not the capacitance, you can have two caps of the same farads and yet they can have different series resistances.

In a related sense an IR camera is a great way to look at circuits/components to se if their cold/warm/hot relative to each other. Just had a flir pro stolen, I'm compelled to get another.

Yup this happens allot Especially in computers in the power supplies you will find n number of videos on youtube showing how if you warm the PSU with a hair dryer from the behind throught he fan it will start working again this usually happens in winters

I had an old 10 megabit Ethernet card that wouldn't work until I heated the 20MHz crystal a bit with my soldering iron to get it started. A lot of intermittent issues are just temperature related.

In my limited capacity, I'm glad to have learned this & with limited resistance but I'm unsure if I'll be granted the chance to use it? 😁

I didn't know capacitors had an ohm value, I thought they were measured in farads.
