The Kodungallur Bharani festival is a yearly festival dedicated to the goddess Bhadrakali of Kodungallur Kurumba Bhagavathy temple held between the Bharani days of months Kumbham and Meenam of the Malayalam calendar.The most spectacular event of the festival is the Kaavu theendal, or the dance of the oracles. On the day of the festival, hundreds of oracles, dressed in red and green costumes, gather at the temple. They dance to the frenzied beat of drums and cymbals, and often slash themselves with swords and knives.
