I love the way Wawrinka refuses to retreat too far behind the baseline when playing ‘the big 3’. He’s well aware that his strength is in being aggressive and, therefore, has to be the one to control proceedings.
By being up on the baseline and taking the ball early, Wawrinka is able to gain the upper hand early on in the rally, giving his opponent little opportunity to be the aggressor themselves. This is especially important against the top players, as they can be particularly clinical when given time to think.
