Hello Nikol. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in March. I had a double mastectomy with a delayed reconstruction. I had the expanders inserted and developed a significant infection that required 9 days in the hospital and an urgent surgery for a debridement and the removal of the expander on the right side. When I had the mastectomies, I chose not to use prosthetics because it made me feel fake. I was so proud of my courage to embrace where I was in my journey and just own where my new journey was taking me. Having an expander on one side and nothing but breast tissue has taken its toll on me. But I need to remind myself the decision I made when I received my diagnosis. I realized I had two choices. I could allow cancer to define me, or I could let God re-define me. I am grateful I chose the latter. Cancer has given me so many incredible gifts. One of which is recognizing I can't wait until my life is perfect to be happy. Learning to embrace and be grateful for the challenges just as much as celebrating even the smallest of wins.
