Here are 10 changes in the Australian Immigration Budget for 2024:
The total number of permanent resident (PR) spots will decrease slightly from 190,000 to 185,000.
For the 482 visa, the required work experience will be reduced from 2 years to 1 year, making it easier for employer-sponsored migrants.
An additional 7,000 places will be available for the 186 PR visa.
The Mates visa and extended Business Visitor visa for Indian nationals will be implemented.
Allocations for the Skilled Independent 189 visa will be cut by about half.
A new National Innovation visa will be introduced to attract exceptionally talented migrants, replacing the Global Talent visa.
The 188 Business and Innovation visa will be closed and replaced with a new visa, but the timing is not yet known.
Net overseas migration is expected to drop from 528,000 in 2022-23 to 260,000 in 2024-25, mainly due to fewer student visas.
Education providers will have a cap on the number of student visas they can issue. To exceed this cap, they must build or provide accommodation.
A new ballot system will be introduced for Work and Holiday Visas from China, Vietnam, and India.
