I’ve often felt lonely in crowds but never with a book. The image you talked about, you between friends and him alone with his books… I would prefer be to be him too.

I had this experience as well as a 19 year old living in Chicago. I lived on the 15th floor, we all had studios I think and my neighbor often had his door open. Walking by, I could see his apartment was just books. Books everywhere and in piles. He, too, had an arm chair in the middle of all these books and it was just so cozy and I always thought, and still do, goals.

And why don't you write a book having this beautiful beginning...?
Indeed, a special experience that led to this moment.

Piles instead of bookshelves. I mean that's really an image out of a story, it's so surreal 😮

That’s awesome!! and a life goal for me😊 I love seeing everyone’s stories of how they became engulfed by reading. For me, I was super young when I got into reading because we had a computer with not much to it (it being the 90s), but I got hooked onto this speed-reading program, and on top of that, I’d hang around my brother who always had Nirvana playing and incense smoking away on his desk while he manuevered through Final Fantasy 7, and he started me on books like Dungeons & Dragons guides and collections of poetry (I still have El Dorado by Poe memorized to this day!).. and as I grew, I drifted towards occult, horror, and fantasy, and my family fed my addiction to books and obsession with gaining knowledge about everything, much to the delight of my teachers

I love this story, thank you for sharing. I'm sure - without you realising it at that time - you had already come to the conclusion that you were unhappy with the life you led, saw no meaning and wanted something else that gave you perspective on the world. You were searching and drunk outside that church club you found one possibility to change that night. And you took that path.
I also think there are always different possibilities for change and you never know what would have happened, had you just forgotten about that man surrounded by his books in the basement flat. But I think, you chose the path because you felt it represented something inside of you, more than other paths would have - and as you see now, you were right to do so 😉

Oh I love this image! I read in secret as a kid. I was always getting yelled at and bullied by my 2 sisters for being weird. My older sister wouldn’t let me play with the other kids so I’d sneak home and read. I had a 2nd grade teacher that was constantly yelling at me (I was quiet in her class & barely spoke). We moved and I was put back a year. My new 2nd grade teacher was really nice but still assigned us baby reading while I’d begun to read my mom’s dirty “historical” novels (always with a dictionary). Finally my new 2nd grade teacher asked me to stay after & I worried she would start yelling at me. Instead she asked me how I could be her best speller and not be able to read? I was offended. In the end she assigned me and another girl different reading. I love reading so I took a bunch of literature classes in college just so I could read. I stumbled into a career in computer engineering and found it hard to find time to read, plus I’m slower these days. I no longer read much more than mystery/detective novels. Sine ive retired I’ve gone from reading 8 a year to 8+ a month. I still feel guilty reading during the day and do most of it at night…. I did find out that most of my colleagues never read a novel since college, they’d rather play video games…. That was pretty shocking and sad.

I vibe with this. I grew up idolizing Dumbledore and the wizard archetype. I wanted to spend my life reading and taking walks to contemplate what I'd read. It spilled over into writing. I work to get by, pay my bills, and settle in at the end of the day with a cup of tea and a book. Right now it's stacks of books filling up my closet but the goal is an apartment where I can install decent bookshelves that won't fall on me haha.

The problem with piles in a basement apartment is if a pipe bursts in an apartment above on a weekend you're away. I lost nearly my whole library and didn't have renter's insurance, oops.

I was in my late 20s when I really got into reading, all because I saw a film about Shirley Jackson. Was like who is this woman, have since read most of her books and have more than I know what to do with 5 years later 😅

I love little moments like that

Wow, that feels like it could be a short story. What was he reading, why, what was happening in the parts of the room you couldn't see??? I have so many questions about this wonderful moment!
