You came to the right conclusion that Christanity and Islam have similarities because they both come from the same divine source. Only islam is more recent so it is like an update and is more suited to todays world. But Allah says in the Quran that the one who follow Jesus will be above non-believers until the end of time so if you follow Jesus and dont necessarly convert to islam you will hopefully still be ok!
