Based on the other comments, mine is probably really wrong. If so, someone tell me why:
With couples in ABCD order, with the male on the left side of each couple, and chairs 1-8, each person can sit on each chair in 1 way, so there are 8 permutations.
When you start rearranging the order of ABCD (think BCAD), there are 24 combinations.
When changing what side of the couple's seats the man/woman are on (think MWWW, where M and W represent the man or woman being on the left chair), there are 16 combinations.
8*16*24=3072
There are 3,072 unique permutations
