On this Intersex Awareness Day, here's a little slice of history from one of the heavyweights of the intersex movement, Bo Laurent. Intersex variations occur in 2% of the population - the same frequency as naturally occurring red hair. Bo founded the Intersex Society of North America (ISNA) in 1993 to protect the human rights of people born with intersex variations. In 1998, Bo wrote an amicus brief to the Colombian constitutional court regarding a ruling on genital surgery for a six-year-old boy; subsequently, Colombia became the first nation in the world to impose legal regulations on intersex surgeries on the basis of human rights, leaning heavily on Bo's amicus brief. Bo's work has been recognized with the Felipa de Souza Human Rights Award, and in press outlets such as Newsweek, the New York Times, NPR’s Fresh Air, and NBC Dateline.
