Is it better to count calories or do intermittent fasting for type 2 diabetes? A study presented by Vicky Pavlou at the American Society of Nutrition conference shows that time restricted feeding was more effective for weight loss than calorie counting. They compared calorie counting, 8 hour time restricted feeding, or normal eating control for 6 months in people with type 2 diabetes. The time restricted feeding group ate as much as they wanted from noon to 8pm and then fasted for the rest of the day. They found that time restricted feeding participants lost more weight compared to calorie counters. Both the time restricted feeding and calorie counters lowered their hemoglobin A1c showing that they both improved blood sugar management. What I found really interesting was that the intermittent fasters just naturally reduced their calorie intake by about 300 calories and said that they found following the diet pretty easy, whereas the calorie counters said that they found it pretty tough to stick with the diet. That’s what science tastes like.
