Michael Clay Thompson is fabulous. It is pricey, but holds the resale value and can be used with multiple children. It is probably the most solid program I’ve seen and we are wrapping up year 13 of homeschooling.

Write by number has been great for my 14 year old dyslexic son so far.

For 5th grade this year I used Lightning Literature for reading comprehension as well as independent reading everyday, IEW S&S for writing, Fix it Grammar, and Phonetic Zoo for spelling... I plan to do the same for next year but just moving up a level. For my 1st grader I used Lightning Literature, Explode the Code, Spelling You See (will not be using for next year, will be using All About Spelling) and Write Shop. I'm considering Core Knowledge but that seems like a lot of prep work.

My 11 year old loves Fix-It! Grammar. I haven’t done the writing portion, but I’m planning on it for next year. He’s retaining a lot with it too. He’s a no frills kind of kid, so he loves the simplicity of it and that it’s quick. It just builds on itself and you’re always using and practicing what you’ve learned. I also have MCT and it’s kind of similar with the sentence labeling but I haven’t done the writing portion. I actually got it for my daughter as I thought it would be more her style so it depends on your kid but both are good just in different ways. She ended up hating it tho 😢 It was just too much information at once and completely overwhelmed her, so I’m saving it for later. I put her in Easy Grammar for a while plus Darts/Arrows and WriteShop.

We used writeshop and it was fun, but it felt very teacher intensive and a bit alllll over the place with instructions. We used level D...I think for my oldest several years ago. Definitely loved the approach and activities, but the amount of time investment at that time was prohibitive. But I may look at it again for my youngest now that everyone is a little more independent.

We LOVE IEW, not sure if it's secular tho, I know the teacher/company is Christian, but I can't recall if there is religious content in the courses. We also really like MBPT for LA units and reading books.

Take a look at Common Sense Press. It’s not expensive and I find it to be a gentle approach to ELA with 4 living books a year. I think it’s 1st grade thought high school
