This is actually the first time I think I ever heard that explained.
As a non-native english speaker trying to become an author, this was incredibly helpful!
Thanks for another interesting lesson.

My teacher told us "People lie. Things lay."
That's always stuck with me.

My teacher taught us that living things lie, and objects lay. She made it pretty easy to remember.

Never in my wildest dreams did I expect to see Ramses in my hometown.

This makes me think people who say "I'm gonna lay down" think about themselves from the third person.

"Lay" is the one that gets me. I know it's right, but "I lay down for a nap yesterday" just sounds wrong.

This from the guy that couldn't help noticing the hymn lyrics at church this morning said "hither to" (instead of "hitherto").

These points are true in some dialects of English, and not in others.

All dialects are correct, based on the use by each community.

I am lying in bed as I watch this and read others' comments. This grammar [or syntax?] lesson is one of the more common ones needed similarly to 'a lot.'

The education system needs to bring back the academic subject, Grammar. (Did I use the comma in its proper place here?)
