I met four code talkers 15 years ago. Super nice guys! They could still speak in code. Got the T-shirt and signatures.

My SeaBee son, a PO2, escorted Peter McDonald, one of two remaining Wind Talkers, to the Christening of the USS Navajo. He is still super sharp mentally and quite a character. He’s also the former chairman of the Navajo Nation.

I saw a documentary with an actual code talker. He stated that the word turtle meant tank.

Only two members from WWII remain. The third just passed on in October this year.
I listened to one of them speak last year in Albuquerque. He was a veteran of Iwo Jima and The Frozen Chosen in Korea where the language was also used for coding. Animals names were used as the base of the message. Different fish designated ships and so on.

Code talkers were used first in WWI in 1918. Different tribe. No radios then Germans were tapping the telephone lines. When the war ended the secret was not declassified in case it was ever needed again someday.
