🏝I had never heard of Mare Island until our friends who live in Vallejo took us there for a day trip. We were blown away by this hidden island in the Bay.

What used to be a naval shipyard from the 1850s has become an industrial artsy wonderland.

As soon as we started exploring, it immediately felt like a place where a post-apocalyptic movie would take place–scenic yet abandoned (in some areas).

We actually saw someone shooting a movie or TV show while we were there, so the initial vibes weren't too far off base.

Here’s my list of things you can do to explore the island to the fullest👇

🎨The Mare Island Art Studios [only open Sat & Sun]: A community of artists has converted some of the shipyard buildings into studios and galleries.

🚢Mare Island Naval Shipyard: Established in 1854, this was the first US naval station on the West Coast and is now a National Historic Landmark.

🪖The Landing Craft Support Museum: Explore a restored ship that was active in WWII. Contact them ahead of time to set up a tour.

🏠Admiral's Mansion: A historic mansion where naval officers stationed on Mare Island lived.

⛪St. Peter's Chapel: Built in 1901, this chapel has beautiful stained-glass windows, many of which were designed by Tiffany Studios.

🥾Mare Island Shoreline Heritage Preserve: Trails with scenic views of San Pablo Bay, Napa River, and the Carquinez Strait.

🤘In September, they host a music festival on the island called Dock of the Bay.

💡What to know before you go:
The bugs were no joke on this island. I'm talking huge, aggressive mosquitos. So, definitely pack the bug spray!
