On a more serious note, in my country, shoes of all things, have extended consumer protection. If they fall apart within 6 months and you haven't used them hiking in Alaska or doing something crazy with them, the store is obligated by law to return money or give you new ones. The burden of proof is on the store, not the consumer, but very few people know and even fewer take advantage of it.
