Bugs That Eat Plastic - Future Recycling?

Some bugs have been found that can digest plastic! Is this is the future of plastic recycling? Please subscribe to continue learning what makes life AWESOME: BioBush.tv/subscribe

Darkling beetle larvae, also called superworms, have been demonstrated eating Styrofoam for nutrition!

Side note: when I say they can eat Styrofoam for nutrition, it's more like they can survive by eating Styrofoam, not that it's their preferred food. So don't feed Styrofoam to superworms!

The way it works is interesting. There is some kind of bacteria in their digestive system that break down plastic into something more useful. Then the larger animal is able to use it for metabolism.

In a previous video, I predicted that if large animals were to eat plastic it would involve microbes doing the initial digestion. So it was really exciting when a paper came out a few months later confirming a real-life example!

Super worms may prefer normal food but you can breed multiple generations on styrofoam alone, they just might be a bit smaller
