Leverage Product Strategy in a Product Sense interview

The path to acing ambiguous Product Sense / Case Study interviews as a L6+ (Director/GPM/Staff/Principal) PM actually requires:
LESS of trying to fit into a framework, and
LESS of trying to make up "scores" to segment and prioritize.

We've been taught to stick to a "framework" and use "scores" to sound structured.

But as PMs at L6+ levels, we know that's NOT how PM'ing is done in the real world.

...and that is why we are often triggered by the thought of trying to prep for yet another Product Sense / case study interview.

"How do I segment/prioritize?", "I can't come up with creative solutions on the spot" are symptoms that the frameworks are actually holding you back.

Imagine your frustration melts away when you bring your practical experience into these interviews....

... hello Product Strategy! When you zoom out and set your strategy up front, you are thinking TOPS-DOWN (aka showing big picture / system / ecosystem thinking).

Most of the education teaches a BOTTOMS-UP method: come up with different users, identify pain points, score, segment, prioritize, solution.

When you set your strategy up front (aka thinking TOPS-DOWN), your segmentation, prioritization, and creative solutioning actually get easier, because you already have a strategy in place!

That's why my client said "๐‘ป๐’‰๐’‚๐’• ๐’˜๐’‚๐’” ๐’”๐’–๐’‘๐’†๐’“ ๐’‰๐’†๐’๐’‘๐’‡๐’–๐’. ๐‘ป๐’‰๐’Š๐’” ๐’Š๐’” ๐’˜๐’‰๐’‚๐’• ๐‘ฐ ๐’๐’†๐’†๐’…๐’†๐’…." when I showed her to zoom out to set a strategy that actually is based on strategic reasoning and not based on random "scores."
